OpenKJ Alternative

The OpenKJ alternative built for today's shows

OpenKJ earned its place: it's free, open source, and it put a real singer rotation in the hands of thousands of KJs. But development has gone quiet, and a modern show asks for more than a rotation list. Here's an honest look at how Karatrack+AI compares, including where OpenKJ still makes sense.

The short version

  • Stay with OpenKJ if you host on a Mac or Linux machine, or if free software matters more to you than new features. Karatrack+AI runs on Windows only.
  • Switch to Karatrack+AI if you want active development, singers who manage their own requests, duplicate-account protection, album art on the singer screen and a 13-language interface.
  • Both charge for the connected phone-request layer: OpenKJ's request service is a monthly subscription, and Karatrack+AI's comes through a Karameet Pro or Executive host account.

Where OpenKJ stands today

As of August 2026, OpenKJ's last stable desktop release dates to September 2021, its code repository shows no new commits through 2023 and 2024, and its mobile request apps were last updated in 2020. The desktop software is free under the GPL; the mobile request service is a separate paid subscription.

Software that still works isn't the same as software that's still moving. Windows updates, new file formats and changing venue needs pile up, and a dormant project can't respond to them. That's usually the moment KJs start looking around.

What changes when you switch

These are the areas where Karatrack+AI goes past what OpenKJ offers, based on OpenKJ's own documentation and source code.

Singers manage their own queue

OpenKJ requests go one way, from singer to host. With Karatrack+AI and Karameet, singers can change a song, reorder their requests, delete one, or check out without walking up to the booth.

One singer, one identity

Merge duplicate singer profiles in one click and keep their whole history, and optionally verify singers with a one-time text code so nobody games the rotation with a second name.

Request controls

Decide once whether the same song can be entered twice, and close requests automatically at a set time or count so the end of the night doesn't overflow.

Album art on the singer screen

Show karaoke manufacturer artwork and album art on the singer screen and in your library, pulled in automatically with Karatrack Library Manager.

Per-singer mic level and EQ

Set each singer's mic level and EQ on the built-in mixer, while their key, tempo and backing-vocal settings are saved to their singer history.

13 languages

The host console and Karakiosk switch between 13 languages, including Spanish, Vietnamese, Tagalog, Korean and Chinese. OpenKJ's interface is English-only.

What OpenKJ still does well

An honest comparison has two sides. OpenKJ is a solid choice if these matter most to you:

  • ✓It's free to download and use, and the source code is open
  • ✓It runs on Windows, Mac and Linux, while Karatrack+AI is Windows-only
  • ✓It covers the fundamentals: automatic rotation, key and tempo control, break music and a kiosk
  • ✓Years of real-world shows behind it

Making the switch

Karatrack+AI comes with a 14-day free trial with every feature unlocked and no credit card. The easiest way to switch is to install it on the same Windows laptop, point it at the karaoke library you already own, and run a few practice rotations before your next show. Your OpenKJ setup stays exactly where it is until you're ready.

One Karatrack+AI license activates two computers, so your backup rig is covered from day one.
