First, which kind of karaoke software do you need?
Search for "karaoke software" and you get four very different products mixed together. Home singing apps (a phone or smart-TV app with a built-in catalog, paid monthly). Subscription song services (a streaming catalog you rent, sometimes with a basic player). Track-creation tools (software for making or editing CDG and MP4 karaoke files). And professional hosting software — the program a KJ runs on a laptop to manage singers, play the karaoke files they own, and drive a screen for the room.
If you host for other people — a bar night, a private party, a mobile DJ gig — you need the fourth kind. Hosting software is built around a rotation of singers, not around one person picking songs, and that difference drives every item on the checklist below.
The checklist: what hosting software has to do well
Score any program you are considering against these. If a vendor cannot answer one of them clearly on their website, ask before you buy.
Plays the files you already own
MP3+G (zipped or as a pair of mp3 and cdg files) is still the backbone of most professional libraries, with MP4 and other video karaoke growing fast. The software must play all of them without converting your library first. Ask specifically about zipped CDG — some players need the files unzipped.
A rotation that stays fair under pressure
Automatic rotation is table stakes. The questions that matter are what happens when a singer walks in late, when a regular wants two songs in a row, when a couple wants to stay together, and when you call the wrong person. Look for a rotation marker, linked singers, a way to skip or reorder without losing someone's place, and an undo.
Song requests without paper slips
Decide how singers will submit songs: walking to the booth, a tablet kiosk, or their own phones. Check whether requests are built into the software or come through a third-party service with its own subscription, and whether the host can accept, decline or edit a request before it lands in the rotation.
Works with no internet
Venue Wi-Fi fails. Your rotation, playback and library must run entirely offline; only extras like phone requests should need a connection. Ask what happens to a show in progress if the internet drops.
Key and tempo control, per singer
Changing key is standard. The better programs remember each singer's key and tempo for each song, so a regular never has to tell you "minus two" again.
A singer screen you control
The screen the room sees should show the karaoke video, who is up next, and whatever you want between singers — artwork, a banner, drink specials. Check that it runs on a second display and that nothing from your host console can leak onto it.
Filler music between singers
Dead air kills a room. The software should play background music between performances and fade it automatically when the next singer starts — ideally with a real DJ panel for parties where you are also the DJ.
Clear licensing and a real trial
One-time purchase or subscription? How many computers per license — and can you move it to a new laptop without calling support? Is the trial the full product or a limited one? A vendor that hides the price or limits the trial to a few songs is telling you something.
Questions to ask the vendor (or their website) before you buy
These are the things that are hard to discover until you are standing in front of a crowd. Get the answers in writing.
- ✓Which karaoke file formats play natively, and which need converting?
- ✓Does the host software work with no internet connection during the show?
- ✓What exactly do song requests from phones cost per month, and who provides that service?
- ✓How many computers does one license activate, and how do I move it to a new laptop?
- ✓Is the free trial the complete product, and for how long?
- ✓When was the last update, and where can I read the release notes?
- ✓Which operating systems are supported — Windows only, or Mac too?
- ✓What are the minimum specs, and does any feature need a dedicated graphics card?
- ✓Can I export my singer history and library data if I switch later?
- ✓Does the interface support the languages my singers speak?
How to test a program before your first paid show
Install the trial on the laptop you will actually host with, point it at your real library, and run a pretend show at home: add eight singers, give two of them a second song, link two as a duo, add a late arrival, then call the wrong singer on purpose and see how hard it is to fix. Plug in a second monitor or TV and confirm the singer screen behaves. Pull the Wi-Fi and keep going.
Twenty minutes of this tells you more than any feature list. If you want to go further, run the trial alongside your current software at a real show for one night — most hosting programs, Karatrack+AI included, will sit next to another program without touching it.
Where Karatrack+AI fits
We build Karatrack+AI for the fourth category: Windows hosting software for KJs, DJs and venues, playing the library you already own, running offline, with a rotation that explains itself and song requests from phones, a kiosk or a tablet handed to the singer. It is a one-time purchase that activates two computers, with a 14-day trial of the complete product and no credit card.
It is not the right choice for everyone. If you host on a Mac, want a rented song catalog instead of your own files, or only ever sing at home, other products fit better — our comparison pages say so by name.
Choosing karaoke software: common questions
+What is the difference between karaoke software and karaoke hosting software?
Karaoke software is a broad term that includes home singing apps, streaming song services and track-editing tools. Karaoke hosting software is the professional program a KJ uses to manage a rotation of singers, play their own karaoke library and drive the screen the audience sees.
+Do I need to buy songs again when I switch hosting software?
No, as long as the new program plays your existing files. Professional hosting software plays the MP3+G and MP4 files you own; only subscription services tie the songs to the service.
+Should I pick a one-time purchase or a subscription?
For the host software itself, a one-time purchase usually costs less over a year of weekly shows. Phone-request features are often a subscription with any vendor because they run on a server; check that price separately.
+Can I run professional karaoke software on a Mac?
Some programs are Mac-compatible and some, including Karatrack+AI, are Windows-only. Check the operating system before anything else on the checklist.
